| HI, my name is Mark. I think I’ve met a few of you at events over the last year, I have got a silver kp60 starlet. Anyway, have been reading the forum for a while and thought someone might be able to help me…Am looking at getting an intercom soon with the intention of hopefully doing the Daybreaker and Wairarapa next year. I want to find out if different brands of headsets are normally compatible, eg if you had an omp intercom, could someone else with say a graytronics headset in their helmet plug straight in? or can you get adaptors for going between brands? Thanks for any info. Cheers, Mark |

Terratrip/Terraphone uses 6mm stereo plugs, as does the Stilo unit.
However, the Terraphone uses the socket on the intercom side and the Stilo one uses the socket on the helmet side. You can apparently get an adapter to make them fit each other.
I believe that Viv uses a Graytronics unit and his headsets plugged happily into my intercom although at different volume levels. _________________ Waving Camera at Shiney Stuff |

I made a helmet headset using some parts from Dick Smiths a few years ago, and just stuck a plug on that suited the intercom it was being plugged into. At the time the retail kits were over $100 and I spent around $4.
It's probably best to get an intercom with variable volume & mic sensitivity so that with an appropriate adaptor, all headsets will work. |

Be aware of MSNZ rules regarding modifying your helmet.. specifically:
| Quote: | Requirements: Protective helmets shall;
(a) Comply with a current approved standard,
(b) Be a good fit on the wearer so they are secure when worn,
(c) Be in good condition, and
(d) Not be modified, except as specifically permitted by the helmet manufacturer, in
particular;
(i) ABS and Polycarbonate helmets shall not be painted,
(ii) Composite shell helmets may only be painted with a paint approved by the helmet
manufacturer,
(iii) Intercom earphones and microphones should only be fitted in helmets specifically
designed for their fitting. In all cases when fitting speaker(s) care must be taken to ensure
that they do not create a hazard for the wearer. |

Cheers, my helmet is an omp open face one and has been designed to have an intercom installed.
Basically i was just trying to find out if you can adapt different brands without too much trouble, and it sounds like you can. Cheers guys. |

So if you don't need to modify the helmet linings or shell to fit your intercom it's quite ok then?? I know i've been using a terracom gear in my helmets for quite a while and never had an issue with them - although you didn't like the look of it at vallyview when i was down there and you had a look. I believe that the last part is most important cos only a retard would modify there helmet and a scutineer should be able to pick it up anyhow
Anyhow i find that if you want to get a decent intercom setup get one brand and use all the bits a pieces compatible with that brand - preferably the same brand stuff and you won't have any problems - omp helmet use omp intercom. I steered away from omp when choosing an intercom for my car as it's battery operated and don't trust them not to get shaken out in a rally stage - and nothing worse than loosing co-driver halfway through a stage _________________ NZ AE 82 GT Liftback for gravel stuff

If you loose your co-driver during a rally stage the intercom would be the least of your worries _________________ Subaru V4 STI

That's why you strap them in - so they can't bail |
